Working with the Spinnaker Trust
|
'Churches Together' in Ashford
are funding a new schools venture which is being organised
with the help of the Spinnaker Trust, a Christian charity
set up to work in schools in parts of South London and North
Kent. Helen Wilson previously worked for Spinnaker and now
she is living in Ashford, has begun to visit schools in the
area encouraging primary aged children to engage with
Christianity.
This new
schools project for Ashford is an amazing God-inspired
opportunity. There is a real need for children to engage
with Christianity and identify with Christians around them.
|

|
The
project is planned in 2 stages with phase 1 being
implemented during the Autumn of 2005. Initially Helen has
visited 3 schools on a fortnightly basis to carry out
assemblies.
With God’s blessing, phase 2 would take the project
in to the area of Christian relevant RE
lessons. Helen would like to take 2 lessons in a
session, fortnightly. These lessons would fall in
line with the national curriculum and again be an
opportunity for children to hear what Christians
believe and just how relevant that is today.

Autumn
Term Newsletter |
|
The first half of the Autumn term has been busy
setting things in place; signing contracts,
contacting schools, making visits and now… actually
beginning the schools work.
I hope you will be able to share in the excitement
of this new venture and will keep up to date with
what is going on by reading this first newsletter
and subsequent issues.
Thank you to everyone who has been so
supportive. Your continued prayers are much
appreciated.

' We are learning to Fly High'
The striking wall displays detailing the mission
statement of the school really struck me as I entered
the hall….The sea of interested faces at Phoenix
Community School, all eager to hear what I was about to
say - not quite knowing what to expect…
I have been visiting the school since mid-October and,
so enjoy being there. During the assemblies children
have travelled a long way… from the mountains where the
lost sheep disappeared, to the place where Jesus met the
lady at the well!! Reinforcing how special we are to
Jesus – just as we are.
It was an honour to be invited to launch Phoenix
school’s ' Friendship Week' in November - National
Anti-bullying Week. During this week schools all over
the country involved children in a variety of activities
enabling them to see their important role in reducing
bullying.
I am continuing to visit this school during the Spring
Term 2006.

Willesborough
Junior School |
Time
is of an essence at Willesborough with such a big
school! Assemblies here get a 10 minute time slot -
quite a challenge for me!! However, I was asked
to carry out an assembly for years 3 and 5 on 30
November, based around their current theme of
'courtesy'.
It was great to finish my visit with a tour of the
display boards around the school showing various
displays of the children’s work on this theme. I am
currently waiting to hear from the school to arrange
dates to visit in the Spring term.

St.
Mary’s C of E Primary School |
|
St. Mary’s C of E Primary School in Ashford
participated in European Prayer Day on 15 November.
About 40 children from various year groups 'dropped
in' to a classroom arranged with 5 prayer stations.
At each station were items and prompts to help focus
their thinking . There was an opportunity to join
the prayer craft table where the children drew
around their hands and used each finger to pray for
something or someone.
I was overwhelmed with the number of
children that came along and were happy to pray with
me, and with the student teacher who gave up her
lunch time to help me.

East Stour
Primary |
It has been a real pleasure to visit this
primary school every 2 weeks. I have been
carrying out assemblies with key stage 1 – a
relatively small group of children which I have
got to know over the weeks.
My last assembly before Christmas was, I think,
my most memorable. When I took the beautifully
wrapped present out of my smelly rubbish bin and
compared it to Jesus’ birth the children were
amazed! Such an unexpected gift and for
everyone to enjoy!

Please
pray…. |
|
-
That God
will provide opportunities to go into 1
new school within Ashford
-
For the
relationships I am building between the
children and staff within these schools
-
That the
children learn and remember at least one
thing about Jesus from each assembly
