TEARFUND works through local churches and
Christian agencies – their partners – to open up
brighter futures for the world’s poorest
communities. Together they are helping people
become all that God wants them to be.
And it’s thanks
largely to Christians in the UK and Ireland that
this is possible. They rely on individuals and
churches for 83 per cent of their income.
TEARFUND supports a wide range of
community development
programmes including
- Clean water
and sanitation
- Community
health and mother and child healthcare
- Literacy and
basic education
- HIV/AIDS
care and education
- Improving
food production and nutrition
- Drug
rehabilitation
- Street
children
- And more!
TEARFUND's work in community is based on
these key principles
- Working with
evangelical partners
- Targeting
the poorest people
- The church
being at the heart of development work
- Helping
partners to be more effective
- Mobilising
the potential of the church
- Investing in
training
- Supporting
local initiative
Areas that
TEARFUND have been active in
disaster response
in recent years include, Afghanistan, Albania,
Burundi, Horn of Africa, Mozambique, Pakistan,
Serbia and Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Southern Africa
and Southern Sudan.
Whatever the
issue – water, debt, hunger or disease – getting
to grips with poverty means influencing those
who have the power to tackle underlying causes.
We all have a voice to use.
TEARFUND doesn’t just deal with the symptoms of poverty, but
the causes as well. That means hands-on work in
poor communities around the world – and
influencing
decision-makers when it comes to the
major issues affecting poor people today. Issues
like not having access to clean water or proper
sanitation.
Being able to earn your
own living is a passport out of
poverty: you can feed your family, educate your
children. It also helps you regain the dignity
and independence that poverty can so easily
strip away.
Q. How does TEARFUND differ from
other agencies?
They have similarities with many other agencies.
they are distinctive in that they are motivated
not just by a purely humanitarian agenda but by
their evangelical Christian values and beliefs.
They bring both material and spiritual support
to people in need.
They differ from some other organisations in the
breadth of their activities - they don't just
deal with one specific issue. Their distinctive
mission is to work with the church in this
country and overseas, in partnership.
